The big day is almost here—May 1, National College Decision Day! This is the deadline for students to commit to the college or university they plan to attend in the fall. It’s an exciting milestone and the culmination of months (or years!) of hard work, research, and personal reflection.
Whether you’ve received several offers or are still weighing your options, here are the key things you need to know as you prepare to make your final choice:
Confirm Your Decision by May 1
This is the national deadline to submit your enrollment deposit to secure your spot. Most colleges require a non-refundable deposit, so be confident in your decision before submitting.
Notify Other Colleges
Once you’ve made your choice, it’s courteous (and helpful) to decline offers from other schools. This can free up spots for waitlisted students.
Review Financial Aid Packages Carefully
Compare award letters closely. If you have questions or think a package doesn’t reflect your current financial situation, you can reach out to the financial aid office to appeal or ask for clarification.
Consider the Big Picture
Don’t just think about rankings or prestige—consider academic fit, campus culture, location, cost, and support services. Where do you see yourself thriving?
No Double Depositing
While it might be tempting to hold spots at two colleges, most schools explicitly prohibit this. It can result in losing both offers.
You’re Almost There
No matter where you choose, remember this: You’ve worked incredibly hard to get to this point. Trust your instincts, be proud of your journey, and get excited for what’s next!
